這個形容詞經常與名詞 response 或 reaction 搭配,當然也可以與其他名詞搭配;其中的 knee-jerk 便是人們熟悉的「膝跳反應」檢查,原先指的是醫師檢查反射動作時,輕敲病人膝蓋並觀察小腿是否本能性抽動的行為,後來衍伸為「直覺反應」甚至「未經思考」的意思。
而 jerk 便有意思多了,筆者在記憶英文單字時最為惱火的便是長度短的單字,因為通常會有著許多意思。比如:
- jerk 作為動詞使用時,有「(使)猝然一動;猛推;急拉」的意思,比如:"What's wrong?" she asked, jerking her head up. 中 jerking her head up 表示猛然地抬頭。
- jerk 作為名詞使用時,與動詞有同樣的意思,此時通常會使用 with a jerk 表示猛然地,比如:The alarm went off and he woke up with a jerk.
